Why Choose Plastic Picking Bins Over Cardboard?
When Shipping Boxes Become Storage Bins
A shipping carton often gets a second job in the warehouse. Staff cut off the flaps, write a product code on the side and place it on a shelf. For temporary storage, this can work well.
Daily picking puts different demands on that box. Workers reach inside repeatedly. Stock moves between locations. Corners catch on shelves, and worn edges need tape. Eventually, replacing boxes becomes another routine task.
For products that stay in a regular picking cycle, plastic picking bins offer a practical alternative. Made from corrugated polypropylene, they combine low weight with a reusable structure designed around storage and access.
Keep Products Visible and Within Reach
A good picking location should let workers identify and reach the right item without moving other containers.
Open-front warehouse picking bins help make this possible. The opening exposes the stock, while the sides keep items within their assigned space. Workers can also see when a location needs replenishment.
Compare this with a deep shipping carton. Small items can disappear below the rim, and loose flaps can obstruct access. A purpose-built opening makes the bin easier to use throughout the shift.
For a spare-parts distributor, this could mean giving each fitting its own clearly marked location. For an apparel warehouse, it could mean separating the same garment by size.
Use Vertical Space with a Suitable Stacking Design
Adding floor space is expensive. Making better use of an existing storage area starts with the container layout.
Stackable picking bins allow compatible units to sit above one another while keeping front access available. A suitable arrangement can create more picking positions within the same footprint.
Ordinary cartons can also be stacked, but frequent access becomes awkward when workers must lift the top box to reach the one below. Open-front stacking designs address that problem.
Stacking performance depends on the bin dimensions, board specification, reinforcement and contents. Buyers should confirm the permitted load and stack height for their chosen design.
Handle Damp Conditions and Routine Cleaning
Untreated cardboard absorbs moisture. A spill or damp storage area can soften the material and leave a box unsuitable for continued use.
PP corrugated plastic resists moisture and has surfaces that workers can wipe clean. Plastic picking boxes are therefore useful where containers need regular cleaning between assignments.
This does not make an open bin a sealed waterproof container. Its advantage is that the material tolerates damp handling better than ordinary paperboard.
Compare the Cost of Repeated Use
Cardboard usually offers a lower purchase price. It remains useful for outbound shipments and short-term storage.
For picking boxes that stay inside a facility, buyers should also count replacement purchases, assembly time and disposal work. A reusable bin spreads its purchase cost across repeated use.
A practical trial can reveal the difference. Place both options in similar picking locations. Record damage, replacements, cleaning time and staff feedback. Use those results to judge the value for your own operation.
Fit the Bin to the Stock and the Shelf
Oversized warehouse picking boxes waste space. Undersized ones require frequent refilling. The right dimensions depend on the product, stock quantity and available storage depth.
